Underdog - movie review

For those of us in the 45 - 55 year old group, we watched Underdog the cartoon, which was on from 1964 to 1973, I think. Who could forget that lovable character saying "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here" and then he'd go save someone or something. Or how about "Look in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a frog" being exclaimed by the onlookers and Underdog replies, "not plane, nor bird, nor even frog.... it's just little ol' me... (he crashes into something) .... Underdog!" and then he wooshes away to save someone or something.

Underdog is a very cute movie and definitely a whole family movie. Jim Belushi does a great job (as usual) as the father of the boy who becomes owner of an adorable beagle who they name "Shoeshine". Shoeshine, after an accident int he mysterious lab of a mad scientist, finds himself with extraordinary powers and the ability to talk. His master, the boy, finds out about it and makes him a superhero costume from his father's college sweater. Underdog's love from the cartoons, Polly Purebred, a beautiful Spaniel, is also his love in this movie. Amazingly, Underdog's master has the hots for the mistress of Polly Purebred - didn't see that coming did ya? ha ha At firrst, Belushi doesn't have any idea about Shoeshine's powers which adds to the comedic scenes. All of the old sayings are in the movie and all the talking in rhymes as Underdog is still intact! It had a lot of laughs and a touching moment here and there. I really liked it.
